today. a mini to do list for your laptop

i love making to do lists and i'm always more productive when i make one. it feels so good to tick off the boxes. but i can never finish a journal, and in the notes app or calendar it always looks boring (very finance bro and non feminine if you ask me). i also needed something easy access. i don't want to open a whole app just to write a quick list. that's why i created today. a mini to do list for your laptop.

even during hard working days, it's important to find whimsy in the little things. instead of a boring to do list in your notes app, add this to your desktop, so you can feel happy every time you write your to-dos and be more productive.

what it does

  • a little paper tab sits on the edge of your screen. click it or pull it out and your list slides open, push it back and it's gone.
  • write your to-dos in a ballpoint pen handwriting. click any line to edit it.
  • tick a box and it gets crossed out, drops to the bottom of the list, and you get a tiny confetti party. our little mouse does a happy hop too.
  • a dotted progress bar fills up as you finish things. it only counts today, so every morning starts fresh.
  • drag it to the left or right side of your screen, wherever it feels right.
  • everything saves on its own, so your list is still there tomorrow.

how to get it

today. is free. get it here: download today. for mac. and windows check out for €0 with your email and your download link shows up straight away (and in your inbox).

how to install

today. is a little indie app, so your mac doesn't know us yet and will show a warning the first time. that's normal, it only takes a minute and you only do it once:

  1. open Today-1.1.0-mac.dmg and drag Today into your Applications folder.
  2. open today. from Applications. your mac will say "Apple could not verify 'Today' is free of malware". click Done (not Move to Trash). you have to try opening it once, otherwise the next step won't show up.
  3. now open System Settings → Privacy & Security and scroll all the way down to the Security part. you'll see "Today" was blocked to protect your Mac. click Open Anyway.
  4. click Open Anyway one more time in the pop-up and enter your mac password.
  5. a little tab appears on the right edge of your screen. click it and start writing ♡

tip: the Open Anyway button only stays there for about an hour after step 2. if you don't see it, just try opening today. again and go back to Privacy & Security.

WINDOWS INSTALLATION

Windows will also show a warning, because the app isn’t signed. A blue “Windows protected your PC” box appears; people click More info → Run anyway.

still not opening?

open Terminal (Applications → Utilities → Terminal), paste this line and press Return:

xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Today.app

then open today. from Applications again and it'll start right up.

right-click the tab to switch sides or quit. works on any mac, intel or apple silicon.
